Texas Democrats Urge Delay on Social Studies Standards

Texas Democratic lawmakers are urging the State Board of Education to pause final action on proposed social studies academic standards. The standards, known as TEKS, are set to be finalized by July 31, as required by a law passed in 2025.

Concerns Over Standards

The lawmakers, led by State Rep. Salman Bhojani, are raising concerns over the proposed standards, which they say remove documented historical contributions of Muslim scholars to mathematics and astronomy. The lawmakers also claim that the proposal frames Islam almost exclusively through conflict and conquest.

The proposed standards are part of a larger revision process, which includes implementing House Bill 27, House Bill 824, and SB24. SB24 requires the State Board of Education to review and revise social studies TEKS related to instruction on communist regimes and ideologies by July 31.

However, the lawmakers’ call for a delay is notable, given that many of them voted in favor of the law that set the July 31 deadline. According to official vote records, 25 House signers of the letter, including Bhojani, voted yes on SB24.
