Texas Candidate Faces Backlash Over Controversial Comments

In a recent social media post, Texas Democratic candidate Maureen Galindo sparked controversy by suggesting the Karnes ICE Detention Center be repurposed as a facility for American Zionists and former ICE officers. Her comments, which included inflammatory remarks about Zionists, have been widely condemned by both Democratic and Republican leaders.

Political Reactions

Galindo’s statements have drawn criticism from Texas Democrats, including Garcia, who labeled them as ‘conspiracy theories and hateful rhetoric.’ Gubernatorial candidate James Talarico also distanced himself, stating he would not campaign alongside Galindo. On the Republican side, Carlos De La Cruz, a GOP primary candidate, expressed his disapproval on social media, calling the rhetoric ‘disgusting.’

National Democratic leaders, such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Rep. Suzan DelBene, have issued statements condemning Galindo’s comments as ‘extremely dangerous’ and ‘vile.’ They urged the Republican leadership to withdraw any support for her candidacy.

Allegations of Conservative Support

Complicating matters, some Democrats allege that Galindo’s campaign has received backing from conservative sources. The Lead Left PAC, a political action committee with reported ties to Republican fundraising platforms, has spent significant funds in support of Galindo and against her opponent, Garcia. Although the PAC identifies as anti-Trump, its connections have raised questions about its true affiliations.

House Speaker Mike Johnson denied any Republican involvement, stating he was unaware of Galindo until her comments surfaced. He remarked that her statements exemplify a shift within the Democratic Party.

Upcoming Primary Runoff

Galindo, a sex therapist, and Garcia, a former sheriff’s deputy, are set to face off in the Democratic primary runoff next week. The Republican candidates, De La Cruz and state lawmaker John Lujan, are also preparing for their runoff. The 35th District, currently represented by Democratic Rep. Greg Casar, has undergone significant boundary changes due to redistricting, altering its political landscape.
