The Texas State Board of Education has voted to make Bible passages required reading in public schools. NBA champion Josh Hart, who frequently praises God on social media, celebrated the decision, saying ‘Whoever has ears let them hear’ with three fire emojis.
Required Readings
The new required reading list includes the Book of Exodus for fifth graders and ‘The Shepherd’s Psalm’ for seventh graders. According to Julie Pickren, a Republican member of the Texas State Board of Education, the readings are intended to provide ‘important insight into the moral and philosophical traditions that have shaped Western civilization’.
Pickren stated that ‘a classical approach to education, one that emphasizes the careful study of primary historical documents, plays a vital role in developing strong critical thinking skills in students.’ She believes that when students engage directly with original writings, speeches, sermons, and foundational texts, they can evaluate ideas and develop a deeper understanding of the principles that have shaped the USA and Texas.
