Texas A&M rolls past Arizona State 48-20 with late defensive scores

In a dominant performance on Saturday, No. 10 Texas A&M defeated Arizona State 48-20, showcasing a balanced attack and a defense that turned the game into a blowout in the final quarter.

Offensive highlights

Quarterback Marcel Reed threw three touchdown passes, completing 15 of 25 attempts for 163 yards. He connected early with wide receiver Mario Craver on a 33‑yard strike to make it 31‑20, and later found Isaiah Horton for a 13‑yard score that extended the lead to 24‑13. Reed also tossed a 4‑yard touchdown to Horton in the second quarter, helping the Aggies build a steady lead.

Running back Rueben Owens contributed a 2‑yard rushing touchdown early in the game, giving Texas A&M an opening lead. Transfer wideout Reed Harris posted a career‑high 189 receiving yards and two touchdowns, while Boley added 254 yards, two scores and two interceptions on the offensive side of the ball.

Defensive heroics

The fourth quarter belonged to the Aggies’ defense. After a Texas A&M punt, Arizona State recovered a fumble on the Aggies’ 34‑yard line, but T.J. Searcy’s pressure forced Cutter Boley into a hurried throw that was intercepted by 261‑pound defensive end Marco Jones, who returned it 55 yards for a touchdown.

Later, safety Julio Humphrey picked off another Boley pass and ran it back 45 yards for a second defensive score, pushing the margin to 41‑20. These turnovers effectively sealed the game.

Arizona State’s effort

The Sun Devils showed flashes of a dynamic offense, with a 21‑yard touchdown catch by Reed Harris to tie the game at 7‑7 early and a 58‑yard reception by Harris that cut the lead to 24‑20 in the third quarter. However, repeated mistakes, including a muffed punt and several turnovers, prevented them from staying competitive.

Lyrik Rawls’ diving interception early in the second half gave the Aggies a chance to extend their lead, and a field goal by Arizona State was the only scoring drive after that.

Looking ahead

Texas A&M remains unbeaten as they prepare to begin SEC play next week against Kentucky. Coach Jimbo Fisher emphasized the need to limit big plays and improve Reed’s accuracy to sustain the winning streak.

Arizona State will open Big 12 competition against Kansas in the Union Jack Classic at Wembley Stadium in London next Saturday.
