A surrogate from Alaska, McKenna West, has traveled to Texas to ask a Dallas court to allow her to seek medical care for the unborn child she is carrying. The child has been diagnosed with a severe heart defect, and the intended parents have allegedly denied the child treatment.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has filed a legal maneuver to support West, arguing that the unborn child deserves a chance at life and that the state can override a parent’s medical decision for a child when necessary to protect the child’s welfare.
Paxton’s office has also sent a letter to UT Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas, reminding them that they are legally obligated to provide medically necessary care to the child. West has asked the Dallas court to recognize her parental right to intervene on medical treatment for the baby.
The case has sparked debate about parental rights and the role of the state in protecting the welfare of unborn children. Anti-abortion group, Texas Alliance for Life, has applauded Paxton’s move, stating that they are proud to live in a state where the sanctity of human life is recognized.
