A man wanted on several felony warrants is in custody after surrendering to SWAT Monday night on West 14th Street in Texarkana, Texas. Kelvin Jones, 40, was booked into the Bi-State jail on charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana, along with warrants for Arkansas parole violation, Texas parole violation, evading arrest/detention, and three Texarkana Texas Municipal Court warrants.

Details of the Standoff

At around 7:45 p.m. Monday, TTPD Officers Jacob Miramontes and Macy Huddle spotted a man driving a Chevrolet Tahoe on West 14th Street and recognized him as someone with several felony warrants. When the officers turned on their lights to stop him, he allegedly drove straight to his house in the 1300 block of Pine Street where he jumped out of the Tahoe and ran inside, with officers in pursuit.

He managed to slam the door shut before they could get there and allegedly used his body weight to hold it closed. He then allegedly used a refrigerator and sofa to barricade the door, according to the news release. Despite repeated commands to come outside, Jones remained in the house.

Because he was wanted on several felony warrants and was listed in the National Crime Information Center as likely armed and dangerous, Texarkana’s SWAT team was called in to help safely resolve the situation. As SWAT officers surrounded the house, negotiators were able to establish contact with Jones. He walked out the front door around 10 p.m. and was taken into custody without incident.

When officers inventoried the Tahoe before it was impounded, they found methamphetamine and marijuana inside, according to the news release.
