Texarkana College announced plans to expand its aviation curriculum by introducing a commercial pilot license program beginning in the fall of 2027. The initiative builds on the success of the college’s aviation maintenance program, which launched two years ago and now enrolls more than 100 students, many of whom earn dual credit while still in high school.
Program development and approvals
College President Jason Smith said the school is in the final stages of preparation. “We’re down to the point where we need to hire a certified flight instructor, then get approval by SACSCOC accreditation and then get FAA final approval and then we’ll be ready,” Smith explained. The college is working closely with the Texarkana Regional Airport Authority, and the new pilot training facilities are expected to occupy the former airport terminal once renovations begin this fall.
Economic and workforce impact
The expansion aligns with ongoing improvements at the Texarkana Regional Airport, which is lengthening and strengthening its runway to accommodate increased air traffic. Smith noted that the airport’s growth will create additional demand for both mechanics and pilots. “Those planes that come in are going to need mechanics and pilots, and that’s what we offer,” he said.
Aviation careers are known for strong earning potential. Smith highlighted that many students already have job offers lined up before completing their programs. “Anything in the aviation program is high‑paying jobs,” he added, emphasizing the college’s pride in graduates who are entering the workforce with positions waiting for them.
Future campus growth
To support the anticipated rise in enrollment, Texarkana College also plans to open two new residence halls over the next two years. The additional housing will help accommodate students from a broader geographic area who are drawn to the college’s specialized aviation training.
Community relevance
The new pilot program reflects a broader effort to strengthen the local economy by providing skilled, well‑paid jobs that support both the aviation industry and the surrounding community. Residents can expect increased opportunities for career advancement, while local businesses may benefit from the influx of students and faculty associated with the expanded campus facilities.
