Teton County voters head to polls for primary election

Jackson, WY — Today marks the primary election for Teton County, with five polling locations open until 7 p.m. Voters gathered at the Teton County Library, the Teton County/Jackson Community Recreation Center and the Old Wilson Schoolhouse Community Center to share the issues that matter most to them.

What voters said

“It’s the inequity between wealth and poverty, basically,” said Anne Muller, adding, “I just don’t like the separation of haves and have‑nots.”

Frank Yankee emphasized his support for public lands: “I pay attention to those that are in support of public lands.”

Kathi Martin expressed enthusiasm for a candidate from Alta, noting, “I am really pleased there is someone from Alta this year. I think we need representation over there.”

Housing costs dominated another conversation. Susie Breen explained, “I think a lot of it is wages, employment and housing. It is way out of whack. It’s not so much that we don’t have the housing, as people cannot afford it, and that’s the big thing. And they’re still only getting paid the minimum, or a little above the minimum. These young ladies that have children and have to work three jobs to just be able to live in a home, that’s ridiculous in Teton County. It’s ridiculous.”

Ron Lucas listed his top concerns as “real estate taxes and views on United States borders.”

Emily Novak highlighted housing and green space, adding, “The queer community is growing, as are other communities, and I’d like to see them stay.”

Susan McGuire summed up a common theme: “I guess the main [issue] is the impact of growth on the valley.”

Candidates on the ground

County Commission hopefuls Wes Gardner and Karyn Chin were visible, shaking hands and distributing signs on street corners throughout town. U.S. House candidate Steve Friess also made an appearance at the Wilson polls, speaking briefly with voters before heading back to his campaign trail.

How to vote

Residents who have not yet voted can still do so at any of the five polling sites before the 7 p.m. deadline. For a complete list of candidates and ballot measures, Buckrail’s candidate coverage remains a useful resource. Results will be tallied later this evening, with updates posted as they become available.

Why the primary matters

This primary will shape the composition of the Teton County Commission, the state legislature delegation and the federal House race. Local issues such as affordable housing, public‑land stewardship and responsible growth are likely to influence the outcomes, reflecting the concerns voiced by voters today.
