CHester, N.Y. – On Sunday afternoon a Tesla sedan careened through the living‑room window of a house on High Street, striking resident Jose Gonzalez while he was seated on his couch. Gonzalez reported a stiff neck, shoulder pain and soreness in his upper and lower back, saying the impact knocked him unconscious for a few seconds.

According to Gonzalez, the vehicle was traveling south and ran a stop sign at a T‑shaped intersection before plowing straight into the home. Witnesses who stopped after the crash told him the driver appeared to be asleep and that the Tesla was operating in Autopilot mode.

“There were two people running toward me saying, ‘He’s asleep. He’s asleep.’ And then when I looked to the side, I saw the Tesla right in the house,” Gonzalez said. “Yeah. And the guy was still out, which is funny.”

Police investigation continues

Chester police released a statement confirming that investigators are still working to determine the cause of the collision. “We are still trying to determine if this collision was the fault of the vehicle, the fault of the driver, or any other environmental factor,” the department said.

Gonzalez, who spent several days in the hospital, believes the driver fell asleep and was unable to react. He also questioned why the vehicle did not stop before reaching the intersection, noting that modern Teslas should recognize stop signs and road endings via GPS and onboard sensors.

“The car should have recognized the stop sign, should have recognized the street ended because those cars operate on the GPS. It should have known that. So there was human error, as I still believe, and technical error as well,” Gonzalez added.

The homeowner is awaiting the final police report so he can work with the driver’s insurance company to begin cleanup and repairs.
