Temple University opens Tyler Center for Art and Creative Exchange in Center City

Philadelphia – Temple University unveiled a new cultural landmark on Tuesday morning, the Tyler Center for Art and Creative Exchange, located in the historic Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in the heart of Center City. The announcement, made exclusively on Action News, signals a major investment in the city’s artistic ecosystem and underscores Temple’s commitment to fostering creative talent.

Purpose and Vision

According to Susan Cahan, dean of Temple’s Tyler School of Art and Architecture, the center is designed to “create new opportunities for artists to develop and showcase their work” while encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration. Cahan emphasized that the facility will serve both emerging and established creators, offering studio space, exhibition galleries, and a program of workshops and public events that connect the university with the broader Philadelphia arts community.

Location Enhances Access

By situating the center inside the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Temple leverages an iconic cultural venue that already draws thousands of visitors each year. The partnership promises to increase foot traffic for both institutions and to make high‑quality art experiences more accessible to residents of all neighborhoods.

Leadership and Support

During a visit to the 6ABC studios, Marta Murray, a post‑MFA fellow at the Tyler School, highlighted the center’s role in nurturing the next generation of creators. “Having a dedicated space in Center City means our students and local artists can engage directly with the public, share ideas, and build professional networks,” Murray said.

The initiative has also garnered support from city officials and local business leaders who view the center as a catalyst for economic revitalization in the arts district. Several Philadelphia council members praised the project for its potential to attract tourism, generate jobs, and reinforce the city’s reputation as a national arts hub.

Program Highlights

  • Rotating exhibitions featuring work from Temple students, faculty, and invited regional artists.
  • Artist‑in‑residence slots that provide studio time, mentorship, and public programming.
  • Community workshops ranging from printmaking to digital media, open to the public.
  • Collaborative projects with the Academy’s existing education programs.

All programs will be free or low‑cost, reflecting Temple’s mission to make the arts inclusive and affordable for families and individuals across the city.

Looking Ahead

The Tyler Center is slated to open its doors to the public later this fall. Temple encourages residents to visit the center’s website for upcoming event calendars, volunteer opportunities, and ways to support the initiative.
