Temple Terrace seniors regain strength with ‘Strong Over 50’ fitness program

Temple Terrace residents age 50 and older are discovering a new source of vitality through the locally‑run “Strong Over 50” fitness program. Created by Micah Morgan, a longtime trainer who saw a gap in the community’s offerings for older adults, the program focuses on strength training to counter the natural decline in muscle mass that begins in the mid‑30s.

Why strength matters for older adults

Medical research, including studies cited by the Cleveland Clinic, shows that adults can lose up to 8% of muscle mass each decade after age 35. This loss reduces mobility, increases fall risk, and can erode independence. Morgan explains, “To defeat Father Time you have to strength train. You have to build that muscle mass and keep those tendons strong.” The program’s one‑hour sessions, held one to three times per week, are designed to address exactly those concerns.

Program structure and community support

Approximately 50 participants attend each class, ranging from those recovering from injuries to grandparents who simply want to keep up with active grandchildren. The classes are offered at little to no cost: about 80% of members attend free of charge, thanks to generous community sponsorships that cover facility fees and equipment.

“I hope they get a sense of community, that they can do this work,” Morgan says. “I want them to get that confidence back, and I want them to feel those results after they leave my class.”

Member stories

Seventy‑four‑year‑old Carol Risher has been attending for over a year. Her primary motivation is staying active for her four lively grandchildren. “When I can play with them without getting winded, I feel like I’m still a part of their lives,” she shares.

Seventy‑one‑year‑old Angilen Adkins joined four months ago to improve her upper‑body strength. She quickly found the group atmosphere inspiring: “It motivates me and encourages me and gives me that go, that punch to do it,” she says.

Fifty‑one‑year‑old Amy Drake Imgram used the program as a turning point after major surgery. “Coming to the gym, finding like‑minded people, kind of brought me back into the light to let me know that life isn’t over yet,” she remarks.

Impact on health and family life

Beyond the physical benefits, participants report increased confidence, better posture, and a renewed sense of purpose. Families notice the difference too; grandchildren are more engaged, and spouses report fewer worries about falls or injuries.

Local health officials commend the initiative as a model for preventive wellness. By offering strength training tailored to older adults, the program aligns with broader public‑health goals to reduce healthcare costs associated with age‑related frailty.

How to join

Residents interested in joining can contact the program coordinator at the Temple Terrace Community Center. No prior fitness experience is required, and the welcoming environment ensures newcomers feel comfortable from day one.

As the population ages, initiatives like “Strong Over 50” demonstrate how faith‑centered, family‑oriented communities can proactively protect the health and independence of their seniors.
