A 17-year-old was killed after being ejected from a speeding Tesla after the car crashed into a guardrail along State Route 60 in Moreno Valley, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) said Monday.
The collision happened at around 9:42 p.m. Sunday on westbound State Route 60, east of Heacock Avenue. Preliminary findings by the CHP showed the Tesla, which had a total of five people inside, including a male driver, tried to pass traffic while traveling at a high rate of speed.
But the driver lost control of the car and collided with the guardrail, which ended up penetrating the vehicle through the roof, the CHP said. When the car came to a sudden stop, the teen, who was sitting in the back without a seatbelt on, was thrown out of the car through the open roof.
The adult male driver suffered major life-threatening injuries while two female passengers were hurt. There was another woman who was sitting in the back middle seat who was not injured at all, the CHP said.
Authorities recovered a loaded weapon inside the car, according to the investigators. The CHP said the investigation will continue.
