Teen in Critical Condition After Shooting Near Dixwell Avenue in New Haven

New Haven police responded to a shooting on Friday morning near the intersection of Dixwell Avenue and Admiral Street. Officers arrived on the scene at approximately 8:30 a.m., alerted by ShotSpotter technology and multiple 911 calls.

When officers entered the two‑block area between Charles and Henry streets, they found a young male victim who appeared to be in his late teens. The teenager had been struck by gunfire and was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

Police Chief David Zannelli confirmed that detectives and patrol officers are still processing the scene. “We are gathering evidence and knocking doors in the closed‑off blocks to speak with residents and potential witnesses,” Zannelli said. The department has not yet recovered the firearm used in the incident.

Community leader Hill Alder Angel Hubbard was present at the scene to show support for both the police and the neighborhood. “We have a teenager in the hospital right now fighting for his life,” Hubbard said, fighting back tears. She noted that the shooting occurred around the start of the school day, adding that the violence leaves her “speechless.”

The incident has raised concerns among parents, educators, and local officials about safety in the Dixwell area, especially as students head to school each morning. While the investigation is ongoing, police are urging anyone with information to contact the New Haven Police Department.

Police Investigation Ongoing

Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood, speaking with residents and reviewing surveillance footage from nearby businesses and homes. The department has asked the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Chief Zannelli emphasized the importance of community cooperation, stating, “We need the help of our neighbors to bring those responsible to justice and to ensure our streets are safe for families and students alike.”

Community Response

Local faith groups and neighborhood organizations have begun organizing support for the victim’s family. Angel Hubbard, a longtime community activist, said she will continue to stand with law enforcement and residents as the investigation proceeds.

New Haven officials have not yet announced any specific policy changes or additional safety measures in response to this shooting, but the incident underscores ongoing concerns about gun violence in urban neighborhoods.

The story will be updated as more information becomes available.
