A teenage hiker from Massachusetts suffered a serious leg injury near the peak of New Hampshire’s Mount Washington on Tuesday afternoon. The 18-year-old hiker, identified as Andrew Nelson of Topsfield, was hiking with eight friends when he suffered a lower leg injury and could not bear weight on his leg.
Despite his injury, Nelson used sheer grit and determination to continue moving back up Tuckerman Ravine Trail towards the summit of Mt. Washington. With occasional assistance from his hiking companions, he hopped, crawled, and otherwise used his determination to continue on.
Rescue personnel from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the Androscoggin Valley Search and Rescue responded to the incident. They transported Nelson down the mountain, where he was placed in a cruiser and taken to the Mount Washington Auto Road. Nelson ultimately refused transport to a local hospital and instead chose to seek treatment back at home.
