Teen Driver Insurance Costs Vary Widely Across States in 2026

Parents across the United States face a steep price tag when they add a teen driver to their auto insurance. 2026 data from CarInsurance.com shows the average premium increase for an 18‑year‑old is $3,721 annually – roughly a 125% jump – but the cost differs dramatically from state to state.

States with the highest teen insurance rates

Louisiana tops the list, where adding a teen pushes the average full‑coverage premium to $13,127 – nearly three times the cost in the cheapest states. Nevada, Michigan and Rhode Island also rank among the most expensive, each exceeding $11,000 per year for a teen driver.

Florida rounds out the top five, with rates about 43% above the national average. These states are also among the costliest for drivers of all ages, reflecting higher base rates and state insurance regulations.

States where teen insurance is most affordable

Vermont offers the lowest average cost for a teen driver at $4,354 per year, followed closely by Ohio ($4,635) and Pennsylvania ($5,066). Hawaii technically posts the cheapest figure at $1,885, but the state law bars insurers from using age as a rating factor, making the rate an outlier.

Gender and age factors

Gender still influences premiums in most states. In Vermont, a male teen pays about $600 more than a female teen. In Louisiana, the gap widens, with male teens averaging $14,076 versus $12,178 for females. Six states – California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina and Pennsylvania – prohibit insurers from using gender to set rates. Montana recently reinstated gender‑based pricing after a 2021 court decision.

Two states, Hawaii and Massachusetts, also exclude age from rating calculations, which explains Hawaii’s unusually low teen rates.

Adding a teen to a family policy vs. a stand‑alone policy

Nationally, it is about $3,700 cheaper to add a teen to a parent’s existing policy than to purchase a separate policy for the teen. However, the savings vary. California, for example, ranks 16th for stand‑alone teen policies at $8,698 but jumps to the third‑most expensive state for the increase when a teen is added to a family policy – an average rise of $5,482.

Georgia shows a similar pattern: a stand‑alone teen policy averages $9,521, while adding the teen to a family policy adds $5,356 on average, placing Georgia fifth for the steepest increase.

Legal age of majority and emancipation

In most states, drivers under 18 are minors and cannot purchase insurance in their own name. The typical age of majority is 18, but Alabama and Nebraska set it at 19, and Mississippi at 21, meaning teens may remain on a parent’s policy longer in those states. Emancipated teens are an exception; they may be able to secure their own coverage, though insurers still evaluate risk based on age and driving history.

What families can do

Understanding state‑specific rates helps families budget and compare options. Parents should shop around, consider bundling policies, and weigh the cost difference between adding a teen to an existing policy versus purchasing a stand‑alone policy. As CarInsurance.com’s lead analyst Brent Buell notes, insurers assess overall household risk, which can produce savings even in high‑cost states.

Ultimately, the data underscores the importance of parental involvement, prudent budgeting, and informed decision‑making when guiding teens onto the road.
