Teen Charged in Fatal Shooting of Girlfriend’s Father in Concord, NC

A tragic event unfolded in Concord, North Carolina, when a late-night argument between teenagers resulted in the death of a father and serious injury to his daughter. The incident occurred early Monday morning on Bedlington Drive NW, where Concord police responded to reports of an assault.

Upon arrival, officers found Lester Jones, 47, deceased from gunshot wounds, and his 16-year-old daughter critically injured. She was immediately transported to a local hospital for treatment. The altercation reportedly began between the 16-year-old girl and her 17-year-old boyfriend, Keshaun Tirrell Degraffenreid, from Charlotte. According to arrest warrants, Degraffenreid physically assaulted the girl before shooting her with a 9mm handgun.

The Concord Police Department stated that Jones was shot while trying to protect his daughter. Degraffenreid fired multiple rounds during the incident, which led to the girl’s serious injuries. After the shooting, Degraffenreid fled the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly after a brief pursuit by officers.

Community Reactions and Legal Proceedings

Neighbor Josh Elmore commented on the father’s bravery, saying, “A father made the ultimate sacrifice for his daughter to protect her.” Another neighbor, Antonio Brown, expressed concern about youth access to firearms, questioning why a 17-year-old had a gun.

Degraffenreid is facing several charges as an adult, including first-degree murder, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, misdemeanor domestic violence, resisting officers, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. He made his first court appearance on June 3, 2026, and is currently held at the Cabarrus County Jail without bond, awaiting his next court date on June 18.
