Teen catches rare gar hybrid in Trinity River, drawing praise from TPWD

In a remarkable local fishing story, 19‑year‑old Sebastian Benitez reeled in a 42‑inch hybrid gar from the Trinity River near Kaufman, Texas. Benitez, who has been pursuing alligator gar for three years, described the catch in an email to NBC 5 as a “true river monster.” The fish is a cross between a female alligator gar and a male longnose gar, a combination scientists say is exceptionally rare.

What makes the hybrid unique

Dan Daughtery, Science Program Director for the Inland Fisheries Division and Director of the Heart of the Hills Fisheries Science Center at Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), explained the hybrid’s distinctive shape. “It’s not narrow like a longnose gar and it’s not duck‑bill like an alligator gar, but it’s triangular,” he said. Daughtery, who holds a Ph.D. in Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, noted that while hybrids up to six feet have been documented, a 42‑inch specimen is a notable achievement for a teenage angler.

Rarity and distribution

According to Daughtery, hybrids of this type appear roughly once in every 100 to 200 fish sampled across Texas waters. “It’s rare. It’s not unheard of, but it is rare,” he told NBC 5. He added that such hybrids can be found wherever alligator gar are present, which is essentially east of the I‑35 corridor throughout the state.

Trinity River’s reputation

The Trinity River is celebrated as one of the world’s premier alligator gar fisheries. Anglers travel from across the United States and abroad to try their luck at landing trophy‑size specimens. TPWD recently announced a September drawing that will allow 150 anglers to harvest one alligator gar over 48 inches from a designated Trinity River stretch, describing it as an opportunity to catch “the fish of a lifetime.”

Benitez’s experience

Benitez used common carp as bait for the hybrid, a method that had previously yielded two alligator gar catches for him. He wrote that the guide who helped him, a well‑known gar specialist named Ceelow, was “astonished” by the find, noting he had only seen one other hybrid in his two decades of Trinity River fishing.

Why the catch matters

Beyond the excitement for local sportsmen, the hybrid provides valuable data for evolutionary scientists studying how ancient fish species persist and interbreed in modern ecosystems. Daughtery emphasized that each rare hybrid adds to the scientific understanding of gar genetics and habitat health.

Community response

TPWD highlighted the catch on its social‑media channels, celebrating both the teen’s skill and the river’s thriving gar population. Local anglers and wildlife enthusiasts have praised the achievement, seeing it as a testament to the Trinity River’s continued importance to Texas’s outdoor heritage.

As the state prepares for its upcoming gar‑harvest drawing, Benitez’s hybrid serves as a reminder that the Trinity River still offers extraordinary opportunities for dedicated anglers and researchers alike.
