Teaching 9/11 to a New Generation: Museums and Schools Expand Education Efforts

With the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks just weeks away, a growing number of educators and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum are working to ensure that a generation of students who never lived through the events can still grasp their significance.

National education push

According to museum president and CEO Beth Hillman, the institution aims to reach 20 million students by the anniversary, providing teachers with lesson plans, digital resources and on‑site field trips. The museum has already engaged 70,000 professionals—firefighters, police officers, FBI agents and analysts—many of whom were not alive on September 11.

Hillman says the museum’s new exhibit, In Their Honor: 25 Years of 9/11‑Inspired Service, will showcase the wave of volunteerism that followed the attacks, giving students concrete examples of how ordinary citizens responded.

Classroom approaches

In Iowa, middle‑school teacher Jason Rude uses personal storytelling and documentary footage to create a “time‑machine” experience for his students. Rude, who was a junior in high school when the attacks occurred, emphasizes historical context rather than graphic details. “We don’t focus on the death and dying,” he explains. “The emotional trauma belongs to those who lived it, not to our students.”

Rude’s curriculum blends primary‑source documents, artifacts and structured lessons to help students understand the lead‑up to the attacks and the broader implications for national security.

Student‑led service

Beyond the classroom, young volunteers are connecting with the legacy of 9/11 through service. Nineteen‑year‑old Sophia Shmagin recently packed meals for families in need through the nonprofit 9/11 Day, which plans to pack 18 million meals for the anniversary. Volunteers are also donating blood, organizing food drives and raising funds through art projects, reinforcing the idea that remembrance can be active and constructive.

State education standards

Teaching 9/11 is not yet a nationwide requirement, but an estimated 25 states have laws or standards that require or strongly encourage public schools to cover the attacks. Thirteen additional states include optional references in their curricula, according to data collected by the Associated Press.

These efforts reflect a broader commitment to preserving memory while equipping young Americans with the historical knowledge needed to navigate a complex world.

Why it matters

As students today face a landscape of school shootings, terrorism and other tragedies, educators argue that understanding 9/11 helps build resilience and civic responsibility. By linking past sacrifice to present service, schools and museums hope to foster a sense of gratitude, patriotism and duty among the next generation.
