As the new academic year begins, many parents are praying for the protection and safety of their children. However, teachers also need emotional encouragement as they face numerous challenges in the classroom.
Teacher Shortages and Burnout
A report from the Annenberg Institute at Brown University found that teacher prestige, interest, preparation, and satisfaction are at or near their lowest point in half a century. Teacher shortages have been heavily reported, with many educators feeling burned out and unsupported.
In Georgia, where the author’s friends who are teachers have had long, successful careers, there has been an ongoing teacher shortage since 2018, which worsened during the COVID-19 pandemic. A 2025 survey of 3,400 K-12 teachers found that many felt they did not have adequate support from administrators and parents, and that low salaries were one of the biggest factors driving them from the profession.
Importance of Community Support
The author, who comes from a family of educators, believes that teaching was once a respected profession with more administrative and community backing. Many teachers had better work-life balance, which is one of the major recommendations for teachers, according to a 2025 RAND Corporation survey.
The author is praying that teachers will successfully meet every learning objective and tackle the challenges they will encounter. A music instructor friend’s prayer embodies her approach to teaching: ‘Lord, give me a fresh supply of strength to do my job, anoint my projects, ideas, and energy. When I am confused, guide me. When I am weary, energize me. When I am burned out, infuse me with the light of the Holy Spirit.’
