A Georgia elementary school teacher died after rescuing a young girl from a rip current off a popular South Carolina beach.
Beloved Teacher
Derrick Moore, a teacher at Rockbridge Elementary School in Georgia’s DeKalb County School District, entered the ocean and got the girl safely to shore but was then pulled underwater by the current, police said.
Moore was a beloved educator and valued member of the district family, officials said. His students affectionately called him “Coach.”
The DeKalb County School District is deeply saddened by the passing of Mr. Derrick Moore. Counselors and other trained support personnel will be available at Rockbridge and Jolly elementary schools to help students and employees cope with Moore’s death.
