Teton County Search and Rescue (TCSAR) mobilized early Thursday morning to retrieve an injured woman and her dog from deep in the Teton Wilderness, the agency announced Thursday afternoon.
The 67-year-old woman from Lander had sustained multiple injuries after getting bucked off her horse the day before. Her companions had contacted dispatch on Wednesday to inform them of the incident. They called back on Thursday when it was clear to them that the injured woman and her dog would need help getting out of the backcountry.
Three TCSAR volunteers and a helicopter pilot loaded into the ship and arrived at the rescue site in just about 23 minutes. The team found a flat place to land near the patient, and the volunteers helped the patient and her dog into the helicopter. They flew back to Jackson and transferred the woman into a waiting Jackson Hole Fire/EMS ambulance. All told, the mission was complete in about three hours, TCSAR noted.
When describing another recent rescue operation, the agency shared a few pointers about best practices when waiting to be assisted by a helicopter. If you are in need of help and are expecting a helicopter, please make yourself visible. Wear bright colors and wave your arms when you see the ship approaching (but do not approach the ship as it is landing). Do not ever wave at a helicopter if you don’t need help.
