Tampa mother urges action on fentanyl after losing husband and stepson

On National Overdose Awareness Day, Tampa resident Lisa Burke spoke to local media about the tragic loss of her husband, John Burke, and her stepson, Brandon Burke, both victims of fentanyl overdoses within a year. Their deaths underscore the growing threat of the synthetic opioid in Hillsborough County.

Local impact of fentanyl

State Attorney Suzy Lopez reported 77 fentanyl‑related deaths in the first half of 2026 in Hillsborough County. While the number of deaths fell 49% compared with the same period in 2025, families continue to feel the devastation.

Family background

John Burke, 51, was a former high‑school athlete who earned a football scholarship to Delta State and later worked as a personal trainer and U.S. Masters track competitor. His addiction began after a prescription for pain medication following back surgery.

Brandon Burke, 30, was also an accomplished athlete, serving as Homecoming king in high school and playing college baseball. He struggled with substance use while in college, which ultimately led to his fatal overdose.

Calls for accountability

“It stole my family,” Burke said. “Someone who is suffering with addiction has to take accountability, and they did, right? They did with their lives.” She emphasized the need for families to confront the reality of fentanyl‑laced drugs.

Legal response

Recent changes to Florida law now permit prosecutors to charge drug dealers with murder when they provide a lethal dose. The Hillsborough County State Attorney’s Office successfully prosecuted a case resulting in a life sentence for a dealer who sold a fentanyl‑containing product.

Lopez noted that fentanyl remains one of the top threats the office faces, and she highlighted ongoing efforts to combat the crisis through both enforcement and public education.

What residents can do

Authorities encourage anyone suspecting fentanyl‑laced substances to report them to law enforcement. Community groups are also increasing outreach to educate families about the dangers of synthetic opioids and the importance of seeking help early.
