Tampa is celebrating its unique identity with 813 Day, a celebration of the city’s area code. The event features deals and specials from local businesses, including $8.13 pizzas and coffee.
History of the 813 Area Code
The 813 area code was introduced in 1953 and initially covered a large section of Florida. Over time, it has become closely associated with Tampa and Hillsborough County.
According to Rodney Kite-Powell, Saunders Foundation Curator of History at the Tampa Bay History Center, the area code has become a symbol of belonging in the city. "It roots people in a place," he said.
Celebrating Tampa’s Culture
The celebration is not just about deals, but also about highlighting Tampa’s unique culture. The city has a rich history, with influences from its cigar and Cuban heritage, as well as its distinctive architecture and food.
Kite-Powell noted that experiencing the community firsthand can help people feel more connected to the city. "When you’re celebrating something like that and you’re in the place and you’re experiencing the culture, experiencing the architecture, experiencing the food, it really can kind of ground you in that place," he said.
Events are being held throughout the city, including a bash at the Unlock Tampa Bay Visitors Center and festivities at Sparkman Wharf.
