War Games and Emergency Response
The drills, which lasted for 10 days, aimed to review the command structure, inter-agency coordination, and emergency-response mechanisms. Lai and his team conducted exercises on commanding defensive operations and maintaining the continued functioning of government during emergency situations.
The presidential office released images of Lai wearing body armor and a helmet, getting into the back of an armored personnel carrier. The drills were intended to ensure that the government can continue operating effectively in the face of various unforeseen circumstances.
Taiwan has long been concerned about the possibility of a Chinese “decapitation” operation, which would target the president and other top leaders in the event of a war. Beijing views Taiwan as its own territory and has vowed to take it by force if necessary.
