Super Micro, a company that produces advanced AI servers, has announced that two of its workers in Taiwan have been detained pending a court hearing. The detentions are part of an investigation into the alleged illegal export of AI servers containing Nvidia chips to China.
Investigation Details
The investigation, launched by Taiwan’s Keelung District Prosecutors’ Office, involves six people who were questioned earlier this week. The four workers from Super Micro were among those questioned, with two being detained and two released on bail. The company has stated that it is cooperating with Taiwanese authorities and has provided access to the employees’ desks and electronic devices.
The alleged illegal export of AI servers is a serious issue, as the servers contain Nvidia chips that are subject to U.S. export controls prohibiting export to China. Super Micro has said that it is not a target of the investigation and has been working with Taiwanese authorities for several months.
In May, Taiwanese prosecutors launched the first round of the investigation, detaining three people suspected of illegally exporting Super Micro’s high-end AI servers. Those three remain in detention.
