Taiwan Coast Guard Shadows Chinese Research Vessel in Sensitive Waters

On Friday, Taiwan’s coast guard announced that it had once again warned off and shadowed a Chinese research vessel operating in waters west of the island. The ship, named Tongji, is the latest in a series of Chinese vessels that have entered what Taiwan describes as sensitive maritime zones, prompting what officials call a pattern of “grey‑zone” harassment.

Location and movements

The Tongji appeared late Thursday about 24.9 nautical miles northwest of the Penghu islands, a strategic archipelago that hosts major Taiwanese military installations. While the vessel was not observed deploying any scientific equipment, the coast guard dispatched a patrol boat to sail alongside it and broadcast strong warnings demanding that it leave the area.

By Friday morning the ship had moved to a position roughly 28 nautical miles west‑southwest of Liuqiu Island, a popular tourist destination at the southern end of the Taiwan Strait. The vessel continued sailing southeast, maintaining a course that kept it within Taiwan’s claimed exclusive economic zone.

Background and Taiwan’s response

Taiwan first reported sighting the Tongji in May. On at least one occasion, observers noted the ship lowering ropes into the water, which Taipei interpreted as an attempt to deploy illegal survey equipment. Chinese state media, however, describe the Tongji as a modern research platform equipped with all‑weather operational capability, remotely operated vehicles, laboratories and unmanned systems.

In a statement, the Taiwan coast guard emphasized its commitment to “firmly defending national sovereignty and ensuring the safety of our nation’s waters.” The agency said it will continue to proactively deploy its own vessels to counter any further incursions.

China’s position

Beijing maintains that Taiwan is part of China and does not recognize the island’s self‑government or its claims to maritime jurisdiction. The Taiwan Affairs Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the latest incident.

China’s military and coast guard conduct regular operations around Taiwan, a pattern that has intensified in recent years as Beijing seeks to assert broader control over the surrounding seas.

Implications

The repeated appearance of the Tongji underscores the ongoing tension between Taiwan and China over maritime boundaries and sovereignty. While the vessel is labeled a research ship, Taiwan views its presence as part of a broader strategy to pressure the island and test the limits of its defensive capabilities.

Observers note that such incidents raise concerns for regional stability and for the safety of commercial and tourist traffic in the busy Taiwan Strait, a key shipping lane for global trade.
