Sylvester Stallone recalls surviving NYC poverty before Rocky fame

Hollywood legend Sylvester Stallone opened up about his early years in New York City in his freshly released memoir, The Steps. The 80‑year‑old recounts how, in 1969, he arrived with just $60 to his name—$43.60 of which was earmarked for rent—and faced a daily battle for survival while pursuing an acting career.

Living on the edge of poverty

Stallone rented a tiny room he later likened to a federal jail cell and shared a single bathroom with ten other tenants. To stretch every dollar, he took a job as a movie‑theater usher earning $34 a week, using the nightly screenings as a free film school.

When laundry was a luxury, he would shower with his clothes on, scrubbing his shirt, pants, underwear and socks together with a bar of soap he could find. “It made sense at the time,” he said, noting that his wife now finds the practice “gross,” but it was a practical way to avoid costly laundromat trips.

Frugal diet for a starving actor

Food was equally scarce. Stallone survived on spoonfuls of cottage cheese and three or four raw eggs a day, later supplementing the diet with occasional chicken breast and apple juice. He joked that the raw‑egg regimen was “terrible” and “remarkable” that he avoided salmonella, but it kept his stomach full without spending money on dishes or utensils.

He also took a night shift at the Dover Delicatessen, working from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The job paid enough to buy a coat for winter, but it also landed him in a police car after an altercation. Handcuffed in his apron, Stallone was briefly held in New York’s notorious “The Tombs” before a judge released him.

Early odd jobs and hard lessons

Before the deli, he cleaned lion cages at the Central Park Zoo, describing the experience as both smelly and frightening. He also dropped out of the American College in Switzerland and left the University of Miami just shy of a drama degree, underscoring how far he was from a conventional path.

Despite repeated rejections from agents—some criticizing his deep voice and asymmetrical mouth, traits that later became his signature—Stallone never lost faith. He said his optimism stemmed from a youthful belief that “if you put every effort forward, deny yourself pleasure, and dedicate yourself, you’ll know 100 % whether you have a chance to be the character you always wished you could be.”

Message for today’s dreamers

Stallone’s story is a testament to perseverance. He urges anyone struggling to “sacrifice completely” and avoid the regret of wondering, “Why didn’t I try harder?” He believes that true success comes from refusing to settle for a halfway point, a lesson he says still echoes in the spirit of “Rocky.”

While the memoir offers vivid anecdotes of hardship, its core message is timeless: hard work, faith in one’s talent, and an unwavering willingness to endure hardship can turn even the bleakest circumstances into a breakthrough.
