Sydney Airport faces delays as air traffic controller shortage prompts temporary flow measures

On Friday morning, Sydney Airport experienced notable flight disruptions after Airservices Australia announced a shortage of air traffic controllers. The federal agency, which manages Australia’s airspace, said it had to activate Air Traffic Flow Management (ATFM) measures at the busy hub because of “roster constraints” and to “safely manage aviation demand.”

ATFM measures lifted, but delays linger

The ATFM restrictions were lifted at 8:15 a.m. (2215 GMT Thursday) once conditions improved, yet passengers were still warned of possible delays of up to ten minutes for the remainder of the morning. Airservices Australia acknowledged that the measures may have disrupted airline scheduling and said it was working closely with carriers to minimise the impact on travellers.

Impact on airlines and passengers

Qantas, one of the airport’s largest operators, reported that several of its flights faced delays exceeding an hour, and six flights were cancelled outright. Sydney Airport’s website did not provide a specific cause for the delays, directing enquiries to Airservices Australia instead.

Recruitment and staffing response

In response to the shortage, Airservices Australia said it is taking steps to recruit additional air traffic controllers and to make it easier to call on extra staff when needed. The agency’s CEO, Rob Sharp, along with other senior executives, is scheduled to appear before a Senate committee later on Friday. The committee is reviewing the state of Australia’s aviation sector and its ability to deliver reliable, affordable services to regional communities.

Recent safety concerns

The staffing issue comes amid heightened scrutiny after a Reuters investigation revealed that several controllers on duty during two near‑miss incidents involving Qantas aircraft in July had been flagged for high fatigue risk. One shift manager described the staffing situation as “a bit insane.” That July incident was the first of six near‑misses at Sydney Airport within roughly a month, prompting the Australian Transport Safety Bureau to launch investigations into possible common safety factors.

Looking ahead

Airservices Australia’s efforts to bolster its controller workforce aim to prevent future disruptions and maintain the safety record of one of the Southern Hemisphere’s busiest airports. Passengers are encouraged to stay informed through airline communications and airport announcements as the agency works to resolve the staffing shortfall.
