Swire Coca-Cola’s New Facility in Colorado Springs Faces Water Use Concerns

A new Swire Coca-Cola bottling facility in Colorado Springs is projected to use over 1.5 million gallons of water per day, according to documents from Colorado Springs Utilities. This significant water demand has sparked community concerns, especially in a region frequently discussing drought and water conservation.

Facility Plans and Water Usage

The planned facility at Peak Innovation Park near the Colorado Springs Airport is a $475 million investment, expected to create 170 jobs. Swire Coca-Cola has announced that the facility will be one of the most advanced in their territory, focusing on sustainability and efficiency. The company aims for LEED Gold certification, emphasizing energy and water efficiency.

However, internal utility documents reveal that the facility’s water demand could equal the daily usage of approximately 22,766 residents. While only Phase 1 of the plant has been approved, Phase 2 could significantly increase water usage, though it remains theoretical at this stage.

Community Concerns and Company Response

Local residents have expressed concerns about the facility’s water usage, questioning the allocation of water resources in an area prone to drought. Swire Coca-Cola has responded by highlighting their commitment to water stewardship and sustainability. The company claims to replenish 329% of the water they use back into nature through various projects, including local water replenishment initiatives.

Despite the projected high water demand, Colorado Springs Utilities has stated that water supplies are available to meet this need. However, they are reviewing requirements for large water users and may require additional studies to assess infrastructure needs.

Economic Impact

Swire Coca-Cola emphasizes the economic benefits of the project, which is expected to support approximately 1,190 construction jobs and generate significant labor income for El Paso County. The facility is part of a broader commitment to the community and aims to boost local employment and economic growth.
