SweetCup Gelato and Sorbet Originale, a gelato shop with a location in Montrose, has expanded to Cypress, bringing a taste of Italy to the area. The shop’s owner, Chida, was inspired to open her own gelato shop after a trip to Italy in 2010, where she was impressed by the emphasis on ingredients and the art of gelato-making.
From Humble Beginnings
Chida started her business with a $20 ice cream machine and went on to earn a certification from Penn State Ice Cream and attend a gelato university in Italy. Despite facing initial skepticism and warnings of a high failure rate, Chida persevered and eventually found success with her unique and authentic gelato flavors.
SweetCup Gelato and Sorbet Originale offers 48 rotating flavors made with ingredients imported from Italy and local ingredients. Some of the unique flavors include the Vampire Delight, a caramelized garlic gelato, and the blueberry lemonade sorbet, made with blueberries handpicked from Moorhead’s Blueberry Farm.
The shop has an off-site manufacturing facility in Montrose and has previously sold its products at Central Market. With the expansion to Cypress, SweetCup Gelato and Sorbet Originale is now able to reach a wider audience and share its passion for authentic Italian gelato.
