Survey Finds Gen Z Links Salary and Credit Score to Romantic Success

Recent research commissioned by fintech platform Current and conducted by Talker Research reveals that money matters are a major factor in how younger adults approach romance. Among Gen Z respondents, a striking 78% say a partner’s salary plays a role in whether true love is possible.

Credit history matters more than income

Financial planners stress that credit behavior can be a clearer indicator of responsibility than income alone. “A credit score is a behavior report, and behavior is exactly what you should care about in a partner,” says Doug Boneparth, a financial planner and author of Money Together. He notes that a credit score shows whether someone pays what they owe, how much they have borrowed, and whether they have recovered from past financial setbacks.

Thomas Balcom, a planner in Lighthouse Point, Fla., adds, “It is much easier to ask someone their credit score than to ask them their salary or net worth. A credit score provides a quick snapshot into someone’s financial life without being too intrusive.” He suggests that knowing a partner’s credit health can help avoid “stepping on a figurative land mine” later on.

Breakups often stem from money issues

The survey also found that 15% of all respondents said money issues directly led to a breakup, with the figure rising to 25% among Gen Z. This underscores the importance of early, honest conversations about finances.

Practical tips for couples

  • Consider credit history, not just salary. A high income can coexist with massive debt, while modest earners may live within their means.
  • Don’t fixate on a perfect score. While an 850 is the ideal FICO score, a 740 or higher already grants favorable lending rates. A secured charge card can help improve a lower score.
  • Use credit information to understand a partner’s story. Boneparth says a 620 with an honest explanation and a plan beats a 780 score from someone who won’t discuss finances.
  • Merge money lives thoughtfully. Couples can choose to combine accounts, keep assets separate, or blend approaches, but should discuss credit histories before major purchases like a home.
  • Timing is key. While a first‑date money quiz would be off‑putting, discussing finances before moving in, marrying, or making large purchases helps build a habit of open dialogue.

Easton Price, a planner in Irvine, Calif., notes that many cohabiting couples already co‑sign leases and split bills, making it essential to know each other’s financial starting point to avoid future stumbling blocks.
