Udhyam Amin, 64, of Kingswood, Surrey, was rushed to St Helier Hospital in Sutton, South London, in February 2026 after falling ill from a roast chicken dinner at his local pub. Emergency staff suspected food poisoning and quickly moved him to a resuscitation room when his blood pH dropped to dangerous levels.
His condition rapidly worsened. He suffered cardiac arrest, was placed on a ventilator, and was diagnosed with sepsis and multi‑organ failure – the most critical case the ICU had seen in weeks. Doctors warned his family that he might not survive the transfer to intensive care.
Intensive care and a long recovery
Udhyam spent two weeks in an induced coma. After emerging, he faced a grueling rehabilitation: learning to walk, speak clearly, and regain the strength that sepsis had stripped away. He now works seven days a week and reports feeling back to his normal self.
“Words cannot express my gratitude for the exceptional care, compassion and dedication the medical teams showed me during the most difficult time of my life,” Udhyam said. “Their skill and commitment saved my life, and I will be forever grateful.”
Family support and fundraising effort
His daughter, Parisha Bains, a surgical registrar at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, described the ordeal as “nothing short of a miracle” and praised the ICU staff for their kindness and constant communication. The family launched a fundraiser for the Epsom and St Helier Hospitals Charity to support the ICU, raising more than £37,000 (about $49,655) so far.
“Udhyam’s story is both remarkable and inspiring,” said Molly Simpson, head of charity and fundraising. “We are enormously thankful to Udhyam’s family for turning their gratitude into action by raising funds to support St Helier ICU.”
Staff nurse Pooja Rani, who cared for Udhyam, added, “Seeing him make such a remarkable recovery and return home to his family is exactly why we do what we do. It was a privilege to be part of his journey.”
