Two Supreme Court Justices, Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett, made a rare public appearance and testified before House and Senate committees, discussing rising security threats and personal safety. The nation’s highest court is requesting millions in taxpayer dollars to enhance protection measures.
Increased Threats
Kagan pointed to data supporting the claim, stating that threats against Congress are up 50% this year, and the Supreme Court police expect a 38% annual increase in threats. Barrett disclosed that she had been forced to wear a bulletproof vest at home, saying, “I didn’t expect that performing this service was going to put me in the position of explaining to my children what a bulletproof vest was and why I had to wear one.”
The Supreme Court is asking for a 10% increase to its budget from last year, with nearly $15 million allocated to hire six additional security agents for each of the nine justices. Another $2 million would fund police officers for the court and establish an off-site security post for faster emergency response.
