Super Typhoon Bavi, equivalent to a Category 5 hurricane, made landfall in the US Pacific Islands on Monday morning. The storm’s center passed over Rota, an island of 2,000 people in the Northern Mariana Islands, with maximum sustained winds over 180 mph.
Impact on US Military Bases
The powerful winds are capable of causing catastrophic damage to structures, downing trees and power lines, and producing prolonged power outages. The US military on Guam posted on social media that it was in its top level of storm readiness and expecting damaging winds.
Guam, which is home to some of the most important US military installations in the Pacific, including Andersen Air Force Base, is facing the potential for hurricane-force winds and heavy rainfall. More than 7,000 active-duty military personnel are based on Guam, which has a total population of more than 150,000 people.
Previous Storms
This is the second super typhoon to hit the area this year. In April, Super Typhoon Sinlaku brought more than 20 inches of rain to parts of the Northern Mariana Islands, causing widespread flooding, prolonged power outages, and extensive damage to homes and infrastructure on Saipan and Tinian.
