Sunland Park, New Mexico, is taking steps to address the recent issues of illegal shooting in an area known as ‘The Wall’. Mayor Pro Tem Raul Telles is working with New Mexico State Police and county officials to combat the gunfire and trespassing.
Concerns from Residents
Residents of nearby Valencia Park and Villa Valencia neighborhoods have complained about trespassing on private property and gunfire near the Doña Ana County Jetport. Telles stated that the gunfire resulted in two homes being shot at last year, with one family having to relocate during the investigation.
Telles emphasized that the city is taking action because families deserve ‘peace of mind’. He believes in people exercising their Second Amendment rights, but wants them to do so in a safe way. To achieve this, Telles is working with county and state officials to install a shooting range and possibly an off-road track as alternatives to the current situation.
In addition to increased patrols, the City of Sunland Park has installed license plate readers and surveillance cameras along the Highway 136 entrance to help law enforcement identify people during investigations. Telles also helped put up ‘No Trespassing’ signs along the lines of private property.
