Every summer, warm weather drives predictable shifts in consumer behavior, with families traveling and buildings using more cooling systems. A recent study by The Motley Fool tested whether this seasonal pattern translates into stock market gains. The study screened 36 publicly traded companies in industries with a genuine reason to do more business in the summer, including hotels, airlines, cruise lines, and HVAC providers.
Methodology
The study used a proprietary 10-year screen, with data from the end of 2015 through the end of 2025. Each company had to clear four tests: summer revenue growth, stock performance after earnings, average size of outperformance, and 10-year price growth.
Only four stocks cleared all four requirements: Hilton Worldwide, Marriott International, Booking Holdings, and Comfort Systems USA. These companies have high-margin business models that allow them to extract massive value from summer demand.
Results
Hilton Worldwide and Marriott International outpaced the S&P 500 in at least eight of the last 10 summers, thanks to their asset-light franchising models. Booking Holdings, a digital travel platform, also performed well, capturing the front-end planning and booking phase of the summer rush. Comfort Systems USA, a commercial HVAC installation business, operates on a need-driven mechanism, providing non-discretionary corporate infrastructure.
The study highlights the importance of looking past seasonal peaks and focusing on pricing power that consistently churns out cash and profits. It also warns against treating seasonal patterns as a substitute for deep business research, as this can be a dangerous trap for long-term investors.
