Summer Heat Waves Intensify

The traditional summer state of mind, characterized by lazy days and warm nights, is becoming a rarity due to intense heat waves. Climate change, primarily caused by the burning of oil, gas, and coal, is leading to record-breaking temperatures worldwide.

Impact on Daily Life

The heat is so extreme in Asia that Japan has introduced a new meteorological category called “kokusho-bi” or “cruelly hot day.” People are adapting to the heat by changing their daily routines, such as taking showers at dawn and dusk, and limiting outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

A recent poll by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research found that Americans are more likely to say extreme heat has had a significant impact on their travel plans, electricity bills, sleep, and outdoor activities. Research at Oxford University published in July discovered that the intense heat influences daily behavior globally, with people making adjustments to their daily activities in seven countries most at risk of heat waves: Brazil, France, India, Nigeria, Turkey, the U.S., and China.

Global Consequences

The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that the contiguous United States experienced its hottest month ever in July. Globally, this is the third-hottest year on record, behind 2024 and 2025, according to climate statistics.

The World Meteorological Organization warned that the combination of accelerated human-caused global warming and a supersized El Nino could lead to 2026 becoming the hottest year on record. The organization also noted that extreme rainfall, tropical cyclones, and other severe weather events are becoming more frequent.
