Capt. Chesley B. ‘Sully’ Sullenberger III, the pilot who safely landed a plane on the Hudson River in 2009, has announced he has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Sullenberger, 75, shared the news on his personal website, stating that his doctor, Dr. Gil Rabinovici with UCSF Medical Center, informed him of the diagnosis, which is in an early stage.
Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disorder that leads to memory loss and other intellectual inabilities. Sullenberger, who has devoted much of his career to aviation, expressed his desire to battle the disease with courage, just as he did during the successful landing of US Airways Flight 1549.
