Sublette County Sheriff’s Office rescues missing hiker Jonathan Bailey and his dog Wrigley after seven‑day search

SUBLETTE COUNTY, WYOMING — The Sublette County Sheriff’s Office confirmed Friday that missing hiker Jonathan Bailey and his dog, Wrigley, were located alive after a seven‑day search in the Wind River Range. The pair had set out from Elkhart Park toward the remote 1,000 Island Lake when they lost contact with the trail.

Search effort and volunteer response

According to a social‑media post from the sheriff’s office, the operation spanned vast distances, rugged terrain, rapidly changing weather and limited communications. The post highlighted the skill, commitment and countless volunteer hours contributed by the men and women of Tip Top Search and Rescue, a local volunteer organization that assisted the official effort.

Members of the public also played a crucial role. The sheriff’s office thanked residents who shared information about Jonathan’s whereabouts, kept an eye on the trails and provided tips that helped narrow the search area. In backcountry rescues, even a seemingly small piece of information can make a decisive difference.

Rescue and reunion

On Friday evening, rescuers located Bailey and Wrigley alive and escorted them back to safety. The sheriff’s office posted, “Most importantly, tonight Jonathan gets to go home — and Wrigley does too.” The pair were reunited with their family members later that night, ending a tense week for the community.

Why the rescue matters to Sublette County

This successful outcome underscores the importance of coordinated search‑and‑rescue resources in a region known for its challenging backcountry. The Wind River Range draws hikers, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts from across the state, and the ability to mobilize volunteers, law‑enforcement officers and local residents quickly can be the difference between life and tragedy.

County officials say the incident will be used as a teaching moment for hikers to prepare thoroughly, carry reliable communication devices and let someone know their planned route before heading into remote areas.

Looking ahead

Tip Top Search and Rescue plans to hold a community outreach event next month to discuss safety best practices and how residents can support future operations. The organization encourages anyone interested in volunteering to contact the Sublette County Sheriff’s Office.

For now, the community can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that Jonathan Bailey and his loyal companion Wrigley are safe and home.
