Storms Damage Buildings, Close Roads in Orange and Milford

Overnight storms caused significant damage in New Haven County, even causing a building collapse on the Orange and Milford town line.

Damage and Road Closures

Firefighters were called to the area of Marsh Hill Road and Executive Boulevard at 1:20 a.m. for a report of a vehicle that hit a telephone pole that had come down. There were live wires on the vehicle.

The driver was not injured, and the vehicle was not damaged, but the driver was trapped in the car, according to Vaughn Dumas, chief of the Orange Volunteer Fire Department.

They were able to safely get the driver out of the vehicle, but on the way to the crash, they noticed significant damage to the roof of a building on Cascade Boulevard, Dumas said.

Crews responded and also found an active gas and water leak in the area, according to Dumas. Firefighters also found downed power lines on railroad tracks. Dumas said that Metro North is handling that.

Marsh Hill Road is closed from Executive Boulevard to the Milford town line due to numerous downed trees and utility poles. Drivers were asked to avoid the area, the Orange Police Department said.

Orange police said cleanup from the early morning storms is well underway, but it will take time for the area to return to normal. Multiple utility poles were snapped in half along Marsh Hill Road, and dozens of trees were damaged on Marsh Hill Road, Executive Lane, and Cascade Boulevard in Orange and Milford.

Police said similar damage was reported in nearby areas of Milford and West Haven. Marsh Hill Road and other affected roads in the area were completely closed and were expected to remain closed for most of the day as crews worked to clear debris.
