Virginia City welcomed an estimated 11,000 motorcycles this past weekend as the annual Street Vibrations rally rolled through Storey County. Law‑enforcement officials said the event proceeded safely, with only three minor crashes reported and no major incidents.
Increased police presence helped keep roads orderly
Storey County Sheriff Mike Cullen explained that deputies anticipated the usual surge of traffic and prepared accordingly. “Some of it is just presence. We want folks to see the deputies on the grade, see them around town,” Cullen said. “We have motorcycle officers and a lot more patrol units in the area just for that presence, reminding folks to slow down, be careful, watch the roadways, and watch for animals and such and be careful.”
Deputies responded to 88 service calls and conducted 56 traffic stops during the three‑day event, resulting in seven arrests. The arrests were unrelated to the rally itself and reflected routine law‑enforcement duties.
Rider responsibility emphasized
Cullen stressed that safe riding ultimately rests with the motorcyclist. “There’s a lot of curves, a lot of hills, ups and downs, and then you add vehicles, you add more motorcyclists, and it can get a little intimidating,” he said. “So we just want folks when they’re coming to visit. Be careful. Do the speed limit, be cautious, and know your limitations when it comes to riding motorcycles in the mountains.”
The sheriff added that Virginia City has become a popular destination for motorcyclists in recent years, drawing visitors who appreciate the town’s historic charm and scenic mountain roads. “It’s grown in the last few years and getting a lot more people up here, a lot more visitors on motorcycles, but again, we’re kind of a destination for motorcycles. It’s nice and beautiful up here, and a good place to ride,” Cullen noted.
Safety reminders for riders
Deputies reminded participants that lane splitting is illegal in Nevada and urged riders to stay alert at all times. The weather remained favorable for riding throughout the weekend, further contributing to the event’s smooth operation.
Storey County officials said they will continue to monitor future Street Vibrations events closely, balancing the economic boost from tourism with the need to protect residents and visitors alike.
