Stonewall Farm Is Gone — Tanglewood Branch Trail Is Here

Park your car at the Lewis and Clark Trailhead on Township Street and you’ll find a trailhead marker, a modest gravel lot, and the immediate sound of running water if it’s rained recently. That’s Tanglewood Branch, a creek corridor that cuts through the western side of Fayetteville and gives this trail its name. You’re about five minutes from Dickson Street, but it won’t feel like it once you drop into the tree line.

Tanglewood Branch Trail is part of the broader Fayetteville trail network but operates a little differently from the paved Greenway sections most people use for bike commuting. This one is natural surface — compacted gravel and dirt singletrack — and it runs roughly three miles one way, connecting the Township Street area down toward the south side of the city near the Cato Springs Road corridor. The terrain rolls gently, with a few steeper creek-bank sections that get slick after rain, so trail shoes with actual grip are worth the trouble.

The corridor is narrow in places, shaded by a dense canopy of oak, hackberry, and river birch that makes it genuinely cool even in July. You’ll cross Tanglewood Branch several times on simple wooden footbridges — some newer, some clearly installed by volunteers years ago. The creek itself isn’t dramatic, but after a good rain it runs clear and fast enough that you’ll hear it before you see it at each crossing.

For wildlife, this trail punches above its weight relative to its location inside city limits. White-tailed deer use the corridor regularly — early morning is your best shot at seeing them. Great blue herons work the creek bends. In spring, wildflowers come in along the south-facing banks: wild ginger, may apples, and patches of phlox that show up for about three weeks before everything greens over.

The trail attracts a mix of trail runners and dog walkers on weekdays, with mountain bikers showing up on weekends — the singletrack sections are beginner-friendly but have enough root exposure and slight elevation change to keep it from feeling flat. Bikes and feet share the path, so pay attention. Leashes are required for dogs, and the creek crossings are narrow enough that a large, excited dog can create genuine traffic problems.

There’s no fee, no permit, no reservation system. Parking at the Township Street lot is free. The trail is maintained by the City of Fayetteville Parks department with assistance from the Northwest Arkansas Trail Blazers, so conditions are generally decent — you can check the city’s trail status page before heading out after heavy rain, since the creek-adjacent sections can flood temporarily.

If you want to extend the outing, the Tanglewood Branch Trail connects at its southern end to the paved Frisco Trail, which puts Lake Sequoyah and the rest of the south Fayetteville network within reach. That makes a five-to-seven mile loop possible if you’re willing to combine surface types. Most people don’t bother and just turn around at a natural stopping point, which works fine — the trail earns its keep without any additions.

Go on a weekday morning in October or early November, when the hardwoods are turning and the creek corridor glows. Bring water, wear shoes that can handle a little mud, and don’t bother with headphones. It’s a short walk from the city into something that actually feels like the Ozarks.
