Stillman College in Tuscaloosa Receives $1 Million Endowment from Dimon Foundation

In a move that bolsters the financial foundation of historically Black colleges, the James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation announced a $12 million investment to support twelve UNCF member institutions. Stillman College, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, is among the beneficiaries, receiving a $1 million permanent endowment.

Why the Endowment Matters

The Dimon Fund to Advance Economic Opportunity, created as part of UNCF’s $1.5 billion capital campaign, is designed to grow endowments, strengthen institutional balance sheets, and provide the capital needed for research, academic programs, and campus infrastructure. By adding permanent endowment capital, the fund helps schools plan for the long term, ensuring that they can continue to serve students seeking the American Dream.

Local Impact on Tuscaloosa

For Stillman College, the infusion of $1 million represents a significant boost to its ability to expand scholarships, improve facilities, and enhance academic offerings. The college, a cornerstone of Tuscaloosa’s educational landscape, serves a diverse student body and plays a vital role in the city’s cultural and economic vitality.

“Our country’s future and strength depend on our young people. Our system of HBCUs continues to serve as the springboard to success for thousands of students,” said Jamie and Judy Dimon in a joint statement. Their personal connection to first‑generation graduates underscores the family‑focused values that align with the mission of many Tuscaloosa families.

Other Alabama HBCUs Benefit

Alongside Stillman, three other Alabama institutions—Miles College in Fairfield, Oakwood University in Huntsville, and Tuskegee University in Tuskegee—are each receiving a $1 million endowment. The collective support aims to address historic inequities by ensuring these colleges have the resources needed to expand opportunity for their students.

Broader National Effort

The Dimon Foundation’s contribution is part of a larger national effort to strengthen HBCUs across the country. The twelve selected schools, ranging from Benedict College in South Carolina to Voorhees University in Denmark, South Carolina, will each receive a matching $5 million institutional contribution from UNCF’s pooled endowment fund.

By securing durable financial foundations, the initiative seeks to create lasting change that goes beyond simply opening doors to higher education. It reflects a shared commitment between UNCF and the Dimon Foundation to equip colleges with the resources necessary to combat inequity and expand opportunity for future generations.

Looking Ahead

Stillman College plans to allocate the endowment toward scholarships, faculty development, and capital projects that will enhance the student experience. Community leaders in Tuscaloosa anticipate that the strengthened financial position will attract additional investment and foster partnerships that benefit both the college and the broader city.

The endowment marks a hopeful step toward a more prosperous future for Tuscaloosa’s students, families, and the region’s educational landscape.
