Step Into the Ring: McKinney’s TX Boxing Club Is the Workout You Didn’t Know You Needed

There is a particular kind of quiet that settles over you the moment you step beneath the canopy of post oaks along the Clearwater Ranch Trail System — a quiet that feels almost impossible given how close you are to the buzz of the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Located off County Road 1006 in far north McKinney, this network of natural surface trails winds through some of the most genuinely wild-feeling terrain in Collin County, and it has become one of my favorite places to exhale.

The trail system sits within and adjacent to Erwin Park, one of Collin County’s most beloved outdoor preserves. But what makes the Clearwater Ranch trails feel distinct is their personality. These are not manicured paths lined with signage every fifty feet. They are honest, earthy trails that demand a little attention — roots to step over, creek crossings to navigate, elevation changes that remind your legs they are actually attached to your body. The terrain rolls and dips through cedar brakes, open meadows, and dense hardwood bottomland, giving hikers and mountain bikers alike a genuine sense of discovery around every bend.

Speaking of mountain bikers — this trail system has quietly built a reputation as one of the better natural riding destinations in North Texas. The singletrack here offers a satisfying mix of technical features and flowing sections that reward riders of varying skill levels. On any given weekend morning, you will find a healthy mix of spandex-clad cyclists and families out for a leisurely hike, and somehow the trails are wide and varied enough to accommodate both without anyone feeling crowded.

For hikers, the experience is deeply restorative. The Elm Fork of the Trinity River threads through the property, and if you time your visit for a weekday morning in autumn, the combination of fall color, birdsong, and the sound of moving water is genuinely hard to beat. Bring binoculars — birders have documented an impressive variety of species here throughout the year, including migratory warblers in spring and fall that stop through in remarkable numbers.

Parking is straightforward off County Road 1006, and the trails are clearly marked at the trailhead even if they take on a more rugged character once you are out in it. Wear closed-toe shoes with grip, carry water regardless of the season, and give yourself more time than you think you need — this is not a place to rush through. Distances range from short loops of under two miles to longer connectors that can push a hike past five or six miles if you link sections together.

McKinney tends to get celebrated for its charming downtown square and its restaurant scene, both of which are thoroughly deserved. But the Clearwater Ranch Trail System is a reminder that this city also has roots in something older and quieter — land that invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and remember what it feels like to walk somewhere genuinely beautiful. Go soon, go often, and go on a Tuesday morning if you can manage it. You will likely have the creek all to yourself.
