Step Into Another World at the Mustangs of Las Colinas

There are public sculptures, and then there are sculptures that stop you dead in your tracks. The Mustangs of Las Colinas, located in the heart of Irving’s gleaming Las Colinas Urban Center, falls firmly into the second category. Standing at the corner of Williams Square Plaza, this monumental bronze masterpiece has been commanding attention since 1984, and trust me — it has not lost a single ounce of its power.

Created by sculptor Robert Glen, the work depicts nine larger-than-life mustangs frozen mid-gallop across a granite stream bed, water jets shooting upward around their hooves to simulate the spray of a river crossing. The horses range in height up to nearly five feet at the shoulder, and the entire composition stretches over 100 feet in length. The detail is extraordinary — every muscle, every flare of a nostril, every ripple of a mane is rendered with almost unsettling precision. Standing beside these animals, you genuinely feel small, and that feeling is part of the magic.

What makes a visit here so rewarding is that the plaza is beautifully designed for lingering. The surrounding Williams Square complex — with its soaring white office towers and manicured grounds — creates an almost cinematic backdrop. Morning light is particularly spectacular, catching the patina on the bronze and sending long shadows across the granite. Bring a camera, because every angle produces a different and dramatic composition.

The Mustangs are free to visit, accessible at any hour, and sit just minutes from the Las Colinas DART rail station, which makes them easy to reach without a car. Parking is also readily available in the surrounding garages if you prefer to drive. The area around the sculpture has several upscale cafés and restaurants within easy walking distance, so a visit can anchor a full afternoon or a relaxed weekend morning stroll.

For history lovers, the nearby National Scouting Museum was once in the neighborhood, but today the area around Williams Square has evolved into a walkable district of hotels, dining, and open green space that complements a stop at the sculpture beautifully. It’s worth noting that the Mustangs hold a Guinness World Record as the largest equestrian sculpture in the world — a fact that earns a moment of quiet appreciation once you’re standing in front of them.

Irving often gets overlooked in favor of its flashier neighbors in the Metroplex, but the Mustangs of Las Colinas are a genuine civic treasure. Whether you’re a longtime Texan or a first-time visitor to the Dallas-Fort Worth area, this is one of those rare landmarks that lives up to every bit of its reputation. Plan to spend at least an hour, and plan to leave wanting to come back.
