Jianna opened in 2019 as part of the Table 301 restaurant family — the same group behind Soby’s and The Lazy Goat — and it occupies a stunning space on the ground floor of what was once a grand old building on South Main. The ceilings soar. The lighting is warm and low. A wood-burning hearth anchors the room, and the smell of something slow-roasted drifts through the dining area like a standing invitation. The design walks a confident line between old-world Italian and modern Southern refinement, and it does so without trying too hard.

The menu is rooted in the cucina of southern Italy, with a serious commitment to housemade pasta that genuinely earns the praise it receives. The rigatoni alla Genovese — a slow-braised onion and beef ragù that has been coaxed into something almost impossibly deep and savory — is the kind of dish that makes you put your fork down for a moment just to appreciate what’s happening. The wood-roasted branzino is equally worthy of your attention, and the burrata, served simply with good olive oil and a little sea salt, reminds you that the best ingredients rarely need much fuss.

What sets Jianna apart from a purely atmospheric standpoint is the wood-burning hearth. Nearly everything that comes out of that kitchen has been touched by fire in some way, and you can taste it. There is a depth to the food here — a slight char, a caramelized edge — that you don’t get from a conventional oven, and it elevates even the simplest preparations.

The wine list is thoughtful and genuinely Italian, with bottles from regions that don’t always make it onto Upstate South Carolina menus: Campania, Sardinia, Friuli. The sommelier team is approachable and happy to guide you, whether you have a budget in mind or just a vague notion that you’d like something red and interesting.

Reservations are strongly recommended on weekends, but the bar seating is walk-in friendly and a wonderful way to eat if you’re dining solo or just want to watch the open kitchen in action. Jianna is located at 10 South Main Street, right in the thick of downtown Greenville’s walkable restaurant corridor, convenient to the Peace Center and a short stroll from the river.

Come hungry, come curious, and come ready to linger. Jianna rewards the unhurried diner, and in a city that has become remarkably good at doing things well, it is one of the finest arguments for sitting down and staying a while.
