Step Inside Davenport’s Best-Kept Secret: The Figge Art Museum

There is a building on the riverfront in downtown Davenport that stops people in their tracks. Its glass-and-steel facade catches the light off the Mississippi in a way that feels almost theatrical, and that sense of drama does not stop at the front door. The Figge Art Museum is one of the finest regional art museums in the entire Midwest, and if you have not yet made the trip to see it for yourself, consider this your personal invitation.

Designed by renowned architect David Chipperfield and opened in 2005, the Figge sits right along River Drive, placing it squarely in the heart of Davenport’s downtown cultural district. The building alone is worth the visit — clean modernist lines, soaring atrium ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows that frame the Mississippi like a living painting. But what is inside is what will keep you coming back.

The permanent collection spans more than 4,000 works and runs the full gamut from Haitian art — one of the most significant collections of its kind in the country — to American Regionalist paintings, European masters, and contemporary works that feel entirely at home in a 21st-century building. The Grant Wood holdings deserve special mention. Wood, the Iowa-born painter behind the iconic American Gothic, has deep ties to the Quad Cities region, and the Figge honors that connection with a dedicated gallery that offers real insight into his life, technique, and artistic legacy. Standing in front of his work here, knowing you are essentially in his backyard, adds a layer of meaning that no textbook can replicate.

Beyond the permanent galleries, the Figge rotates in ambitious traveling exhibitions throughout the year that routinely attract visitors from Chicago, Minneapolis, and beyond. Past shows have brought in works tied to national touring programs, giving Davenport an arts credibility that surprises first-time visitors. Check the calendar before you go — there is almost always something new worth catching.

The museum is also genuinely welcoming to families. The lower-level ArtQuest Studio is an interactive, hands-on space where kids can create their own work, and the staff throughout the building is approachable and knowledgeable without being stuffy. Sunday afternoons here feel like a community ritual, with locals of all ages wandering through galleries, lingering in the café, and sitting by the windows watching river traffic drift by.

Admission is reasonable, parking along River Drive is easy to find, and the museum’s café serves a solid lunch if you want to make a full afternoon of it. My suggestion: arrive around noon, spend two unhurried hours in the galleries, grab a coffee, and then walk the riverfront path that stretches just outside the door. You will leave Davenport wondering why it took you so long to come.

The Figge is located at 225 West Second Street in downtown Davenport. Hours vary by season, so a quick check of their website before you go is always a good idea. But whenever you show up, the river will be right there, the art will be waiting, and Davenport will make a very good first impression.
