Step Back Into the Wild West at the Fort Smith Frontier Days Living History Event at Creekmore Park

There are city parks, and then there are city parks that feel like they were dreamed up by someone who genuinely loved their town. Creekmore Park, tucked into the residential heart of Fort Smith along Zero Street, falls firmly into the second category. From the moment you pull into the parking lot and hear the distant splash of kids at the pool and the laughter echoing across the picnic shelters, you understand that this is not just a patch of grass with a swing set. This is a genuine community treasure, and it deserves far more attention than it typically gets from visitors passing through the River Valley.

Spanning more than 150 acres, Creekmore Park is Fort Smith’s largest municipal park, and it manages to pack an impressive amount of variety into that space without ever feeling crowded or chaotic. The centerpiece, at least for families, is the outdoor aquatic center, which features a zero-entry pool, water slides, and a splash pad that keeps the younger set thoroughly entertained through the long Arkansas summers. But the park’s appeal extends well beyond the water. There are beautifully maintained walking and jogging trails that wind beneath a canopy of mature oaks and hickories, a disc golf course that draws serious players from across the region, tennis courts, a fully equipped fitness trail, and a charming little duck pond that seems almost custom-built for a slow, contemplative afternoon stroll.

The picnic areas are some of the best in the state, with large covered pavilions that can be reserved for reunions, birthday parties, and everything in between. If you show up on a warm weekend morning, you will almost certainly find multiple generations of Fort Smith families spread out across the grounds, grills going, kids darting between the playgrounds, and older folks settled comfortably in lawn chairs with sweet tea in hand. It is the kind of scene that reminds you what public green space is really for.

One of the park’s quieter gems is its small but delightful rose garden, which blooms brilliantly in late spring and early summer and makes for a genuinely lovely backdrop if you happen to be traveling with someone who appreciates that sort of thing. The garden sits near the park’s central pavilion area and is well worth seeking out even if roses are not typically your thing.

Creekmore Park is free and open to the public year-round, with fees only for specific amenities like the aquatic center. It sits in a safe, walkable neighborhood about two miles from downtown Fort Smith, making it an easy add-on to any visit. Whether you are in town for a weekend or just passing through on your way west, carve out a couple of hours here. Fort Smith does not always get the credit it deserves as a livable, lovable city, but spend an afternoon at Creekmore Park and you will start to understand exactly why the people here are so proud of their home.
