State Street Bridge to Close Midday Next Week for Fall Boat Run Prep

Downtown Chicago residents and commuters should plan for detours next week as the State Street Bridge over the main branch of the Chicago River will be fully closed for several hours each day, Monday through Thursday. The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) announced that the bridge will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. for balancing and testing in preparation for the fall boat run season.

Detour routes for drivers

Northbound traffic will be redirected west on State Street to Wacker Drive, then north on Dearborn Street, and east on Kinzie Street before returning to State Street. Southbound drivers will be routed west on Kinzie Street, south on Wells Street, and east on Washington Street before rejoining State Street.

Why the bridge is closed

The bridge, which reopened to pedestrians and vehicles in March after nearly a year of closure, is undergoing final adjustments to ensure safe operation for the upcoming boat run season. The bridge was originally shut for emergency repairs in April 2025 and was slated to reopen in November of that year. However, CDOT discovered additional steel repairs were needed, extending the timeline.

Impact on the community

While the closure may cause inconvenience for commuters, the work is essential to maintain the bridge’s structural integrity and to support Chicago’s vibrant river tourism. The fall boat run season draws thousands of visitors who enjoy scenic cruises, dining experiences, and historic tours along the river. Ensuring the bridge operates smoothly helps keep the river corridor safe and accessible for both residents and tourists.

What to expect after the work

Once the balancing and testing are complete, the State Street Bridge will resume normal operations for vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge’s reliable performance is critical for downtown traffic flow and for the many river‑related events that take place throughout the year.

Additional information

Drivers can check CDOT’s website or follow the department’s social‑media channels for real‑time updates on the closure and any changes to detour routes. The department encourages commuters to allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes or public transportation where possible.
