State police helicopter collides with small plane near Carlisle Airport

A mid‑air collision involving a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter and a small Cessna 150 aircraft occurred Monday evening near the Carlisle airport, located about 20 miles west of Harrisburg. The Bell 407 helicopter was on an approach from the east when it struck the Cessna, which had been circling the field.

Video from local TV station WPMT showed the wreckage of the helicopter, bearing the state police emblem, lying on its side near the runway. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that two state police officers were aboard the helicopter, though the number of occupants in the Cessna has not been released.

Response from State Officials

Governor Josh Shapiro posted on social media that he had been briefed on the crash and was heading to the scene. “Lori and I are praying hard and we ask all of our fellow Pennsylvanians to join us,” he wrote.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA have opened investigations. The NTSB typically takes one to two years to complete a full report on a crash of this nature.

Airport Context

Carlisle Airport is a non‑towered field with a single 4,000‑foot runway. Pilots communicate their intentions on a common radio frequency, a standard practice at many small, uncontrolled airports. The lack of an air‑traffic control tower means pilots must rely on self‑announced positions and clear communication to avoid conflicts.

Safety Concerns and Past Incidents

This accident adds to growing scrutiny of shared airspace between helicopters and fixed‑wing aircraft. Last year, a mid‑air collision at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport claimed 67 lives when a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter struck an American Airlines regional jet during landing. The NTSB’s final report cited a series of procedural failures, including the FAA’s placement of a helicopter route too close to the runway approach path and inadequate review of helicopter routing data.

Officials hope that the ongoing investigation will identify any systemic issues that contributed to the Carlisle crash and lead to recommendations for improved safety protocols.

What Comes Next

Authorities have not released details about injuries or fatalities among those on board either aircraft. As the investigation proceeds, the FAA and NTSB will examine flight‑tracking data, pilot communications, and aircraft maintenance records. Local residents and families of the crew have been asked to keep the responders and investigators in their thoughts.

The incident underscores the importance of vigilant air‑traffic coordination, especially at smaller airports where pilots must self‑manage traffic without the aid of a control tower.
